Acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine (CHM) are based on a holistic view of the body and mind.
Emotions, moods, and challenging behaviors can be both a symptom and a cause of disease. Chinese medicine has the advantage of being able to name and address emotional imbalances that fall between the cracks of existing categories in biomedicine and psychology.
The “map” of structures and functions we use in classical Chinese medicine includes the mind as well as the body. For example, a person with depression, trouble falling asleep, irritability, dizziness, and a wiry pulse quality would be treated differently than someone with depression, lack of motivation, cold hands and feet, poor memory and obsessive thoughts. The former may have a liver-wood imbalance, while the latter may have a deficiency in spleen-earth yang. Patients often find these new, unfamiliar ways of naming the signs and symptoms they are experiencing to be both intuitively and logically meaningful.
The diagnostic tools we use, such as examining features of the tongue, pulse, and meridian-channel points, show us which underlying patterns of imbalance are affecting the physical, emotional and cognitive health of each person. When we counter-balance this imbalance, we help guide the mind and body back to optimal functioning.
