Pain is a complex phenomenon, and acupuncture is a complex intervention that can promote healing of muscles, tendons, ligaments, bones and nerves as well as alter the patterns of pain sensations that become habitual in chronic pain syndromes.

Acupuncture for Pain Relief: How It Eases Acute and Chronic Pain Naturally

Acupuncture is best-known for treating acute and chronic pain. From the perspective of integrated medicine, when we open the acupuncture channels that run through the affected areas, pain signals are disrupted locally in the soft tissue and distally in the brain and spinal cord.  Relief may begin after the first session and is a cumulative process that continues until pain is eliminated or levels of pain plateau. For acute or severe pain, treatment often needs to be 1-2x per week, and then tapers to weekly sessions and eventually requires only maintenance every 4-8 weeks.

In general, acupuncture treats
the following types of pain:

  • Pain due to injuries or repetitive use
  • Postsurgical pain
  • Arthritis pain
  • Cancer pain
  • Neurogenic pain
  • Physical pain related to stress or emotional trauma
